About The Parish
St Stephen by Launceston Rural Parish is a civil parish in the east of Cornwall. The former parish of St Stephen by Launceston was abolished in 1894. St Stephen by Launceston Urban became part of Launceston Town and includes the 13th Century Church of St Stephen. St Stephen by Launceston Rural Parish surrounds the town of Launceston on three sides. It stretches from the River Tamar on the Devon border in the east to Egloskerry in the west. It is bounded to the north by Werrington and North Petherwin, and to the south by Lawhitton and St Thomas.
The Parish includes the designated Area of Great Landscape Value based on the Kensey Valley and the Parish Council has land designated as Village Greens in Langore and Truscott. Truscott Ponds and verges south of the pond are planted and maintained by the Parish Council to conserve and increase biodiversity.
The Parish is essentially rural but has a thriving retail outlet at Homeleigh in the Dutson area to the east. In 2016, there were approximately 166 households in the rural parish and the population at the 2011 Census was 360.
